PSC Chairman Hopes Candon City's Sports Tourism Blueprint Will Inspire Other LGUs
Candon City's Success as a Sports Tourism Hub
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio lauded Candon City in Ilocos Sur as a blueprint for sports tourism, citing its successful hosting of numerous events, including volleyball and basketball tournaments. Gregorio highlighted that despite being five hours from Manila, Candon City has managed to attract international attention, with many countries expected to participate in upcoming events. He credited Mayor Eric Singson's long-standing vision and aggressive efforts for this strategic positioning.
Call for Other LGUs to Emulate Candon City
Gregorio expressed his hope that other local government units (LGUs) across the Philippines would follow Candon City's example. He emphasized that promoting sports tourism not only boosts the region's profile but also fosters grassroots sports development among children. The PSC is keen to support such initiatives. He noted that Candon City, once merely a transit point to other destinations, has now established its own distinct identity and reputation through sports.
Preparations for the AVC Women's Volleyball Challenge Cup
During his recent visit two weeks prior, Gregorio inspected Candon City's preparations for the AVC Women's Volleyball Challenge Cup. He noted the rapid construction of an additional 50-room hotel and the world-class quality of the arena. A memorandum of agreement has been established between the PSC, Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), and the Candon City local organizing committee, clearly defining each entity's roles. Gregorio confirmed that preparations are on track, and the city is ready to welcome participating countries.
