Philippines Expects Peak Heat Index Near 40°C; Public Pools Open for Relief
Philippines Forecasts Extreme Heat
PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) has announced that April and early May will mark the peak of the dry season in the Philippines, with temperatures in some parts of Northern and Central Luzon potentially reaching 40°C. The heat index, or 'feels like' temperature, is expected to be even higher. Cotabato City and Dagupan City are forecast to hit a maximum heat index of 41°C, while several other areas, including Bacnotan, La Union, Borongan City, Coron, Palawan, Dumangas, Iloilo, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, Pili, Camarines Sur, and Zamboanga City, could experience heat indices of 40°C.
Measures and Recommendations to Beat the Heat
In response to the anticipated extreme heat, the Manila city government has banned inflatable swimming pools on streets and is instead opening public swimming pools, such as the Dapitan Sports Complex, for citizens. The pool operates from 12 PM to 3 PM on Tuesdays to Fridays, and from 11 AM to 3 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. Mondays are reserved for maintenance and cleaning. Health experts advise swimming at beaches or pools before 9 AM or after 4 PM, and strongly recommend applying sunscreen for children.
Typhoon Sinlaku's Path and Impact
Meanwhile, Typhoon Sinlaku is currently located approximately 2,480 km east of the Philippines but is gradually weakening and is not expected to directly impact the mainland. Consequently, most parts of the Philippines will continue to experience dry and hot weather. While Mindanao is forecast to have clear and hot days, localized rain showers are expected in Basilan and SOCCSKSARGEN. Luzon and Metro Manila are likely to remain clear and hot with no significant rainfall anticipated in the coming days.
