Fukushima Disaster 15th Anniversary: Japan Faces Decommissioning Challenges
As Japan marks the 15th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the decommissioning of the power plant faces difficulties in meeting its 2051 target, with over 22,000 lives lost.
15 Years Since Fukushima Disaster
Japan marked the 15th anniversary on Wednesday (local time) of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, caused by an earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku region. This catastrophe is recorded as the world's worst nuclear disaster since the 1986 Chernobyl incident. The triple disaster—a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, a tsunami, and the meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant—claimed the lives of over 22,000 people.
Decommissioning Difficulties and Government Response
The power plant operator aims to decommission the damaged facilities by 2051, but continues to face challenges. The Japanese central government no longer hosts memorial ceremonies.
