Former Fukushima Nuclear Plant Worker Dedicates Life to Abandoned Pets After Disaster
Former Fukushima nuclear plant employee Toru Akama's devoted life to caring for dozens of abandoned pets since the nuclear accident has been highlighted. He views this as a personal act of atonement.
The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster and Pets
Not far from the site of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, former power plant employee Toru Akama (63) is caring for dozens of abandoned pets left behind after the catastrophe 15 years ago. He considers this work part of his journey of atonement. These are animals whose owners evacuated following the triple disaster of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident that occurred on March 11, 2011.
Dedication to Abandoned Lives
The rural tranquility of what was once an evacuation zone is broken by the meows and barks of cats and dogs whenever Akama brings them food. The 63-year-old continues his devoted care, believing these animals were abandoned because of the nuclear plant where he worked for many years.
