US Diplomatic Facility in Baghdad Attacked by Drone; No Casualties
US Diplomatic Facility Hit, No Casualties Reported
A U.S. diplomatic facility in Baghdad was hit by a drone attack. According to The Washington Post, the incident, believed to be a retaliatory drone attack by Iran-backed militias, occurred last Tuesday. The targeted location was the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, and no immediate casualties were reported.
A total of six drones were launched at the facility during the attack, with five of them intercepted. One drone landed near a guard tower, and personnel within the facility were reportedly instructed to 'take cover and get down.'
Suspected Iran-Backed Militia Involvement and Iraq's Response
The Washington Post, citing security officials and U.S. Department of State alerts, reported that the attack was likely carried out by militias associated with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose coalition of Iran-linked Shiite armed groups that have previously targeted U.S. forces in the region.
The Iraqi Ministry of Defense condemned drone and missile attacks on its airbases, including Martyr Muhammad Alaa Air Base, via X (formerly Twitter), but did not directly mention the attack on the U.S. facility or Iran. The Iraqi Ministry of Defense emphasized that these airbases are fully sovereign Iraqi property and do not host any foreign troops.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of State, in response to the launch of Operation 'Epic Fury' and escalating conflict with Iran, had previously urged U.S. citizens in over a dozen Middle Eastern countries to evacuate immediately via Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar on March 2.
