Drone Attack Occurs Near UAE Consulate in Erbil
A fire, believed to be the result of a drone attack, occurred Monday night local time near the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Consulate in Erbil, Iraq. Witness footage confirmed by Reuters showed black smoke billowing into the night sky alongside flames. The Kurdistan Regional Government's counter-terrorism unit reported that three drones were shot down in the area, with the debris of one falling close to the consulate. The exact extent of damage or casualties from this attack is currently unclear.
UAE Condemns Attack and Expresses International Concern
Regarding this attack, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement early Tuesday strongly condemning the drone attack on the UAE Consulate in Erbil. Such attacks reconfirm the unstable security situation in the Middle East and are expected to prompt the international community to work towards de-escalating tensions in the region. Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, several armed groups inside and outside Iraq have carried out similar attacks in the past, and further investigation is expected.
