US allows foreign companies in AI export program, including Samsung and SK Hynix
Expansion of Foreign Company Participation in AI Export Program
The US Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA) announced that it would allow foreign companies to participate in its AI export program, which aims to bolster US leadership in artificial intelligence. This decision marks a shift from President Donald Trump's previous America-centric approach, set by a July 2025 executive order defining "AI technology made in America." The Commerce Department's move is based on the recognition that collaboration with allied high-tech firms is essential for maintaining US dominance in the AI sector.
Potential for Korean Companies and White House AI Cooperation
The ITA stated that it might grant National Certified Enterprise (NCE) status to foreign companies that offer high-value in hardware, infrastructure, AI models, and systems, contributing to US national interests. Consequently, two South Korean companies, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which supply high-bandwidth memory for NVIDIA's AI chips, could potentially join the program and be designated as NCEs. Meanwhile, the US White House is seeking to resume cooperation with AI firm Anthropic, centering on the next-generation AI model 'Mythos,' after resolving previous conflicts, driven by the increasing need for cyberattack response.
