West Bank: Settlement Expansion and Increased Restrictions on Palestinians
Israeli Settlement Expansion and Movement Restrictions in the West Bank
During Israel's war with Iran, the Israeli government approved the construction of 34 new illegal settlements across the occupied West Bank. This is viewed by the UN not as a haphazard occurrence but as a pattern of complicity between the Israeli army and settlers. This expansion means the shrinking of Palestinian cities and land, with Israeli flags and manifestations of illegal settler presence further encroaching on Palestinian territory. Palestinians lose an average of 90 hours each month waiting at Israeli checkpoints, severely hindering their daily movements.
Escalation of Violence and Displacement
According to human rights organizations, during the month of March, Israeli soldiers and settlers carried out nearly 2,000 separate attacks against Palestinians across the occupied West Bank. This has led to the displacement of 36,000 Palestinians in one year due to settler violence alone. Areas where settlers establish a presence become too dangerous for Palestinians to approach, interpreted as an aim to displace Palestinians and create ethnic cleansing in the occupied territory. All construction work, including roads, is carried out to benefit and serve illegal Israeli settlements, often at the expense of Palestinian villages and towns whose land is confiscated.
Shrinking Palestinian Land and Horizons
Driving in the occupied West Bank, Palestinians not only brave delays and danger but also bear witness to how fast their land and horizons are shrinking. Israel's ongoing settlement expansion policy and settler violence continue to threaten Palestinian lives, making a peaceful resolution increasingly difficult.
