Japan's Ruling and Opposition Parties Discuss Imperial Family Size, Urge Early Revision
Imperial Family Size Discussions Resume
Discussions among representatives of Japan's ruling and opposition parties on securing the number of Imperial family members were held on April 15th, marking the first such meeting in approximately a year. Speaker Mori Shuuin expressed his intention to push for the establishment of an Imperial Household Law amendment during the current Diet session. Today's discussions focused on two proposals: one where female Imperial family members remain in the Imperial Household after marriage, and another where a male descendant from a former Imperial family branch is adopted. Thirteen ruling and opposition parties and factions presented their views.
Party Positions and Future Challenges
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) supported both proposals but prioritized the adoption of male descendants from former Imperial family branches. In contrast, Tamaki, leader of the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party for the People, urged simultaneous discussions on both proposals to reach a conclusion swiftly. The Centrist Reform Alliance generally agreed with the proposal allowing female Imperial family members to remain in the Imperial Household after marriage, but noted internal disagreement on whether to grant Imperial status to their spouses or children. Speaker Mori Shuuin requested the Centrist Reform Alliance to consolidate its internal views within a month.
