Iran's Leadership Void Deepens, US Peace Talks Face Hurdles
Iran's Power Vacuum and Rise of Hardliners After Supreme Leader's Death
Following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on the first day of the war, and the continued absence of his designated successor, son Mojtaba Khamenei, a power vacuum has deepened within Iran. Reports indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei is currently physically incapacitated, leading to military hardliners seizing power by leveraging the Khamenei family's 'father-to-son succession' ideology.
Hardliner Leadership Reinforces, Impeding US Negotiations
Currently, Iran's key power figures are individuals associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). While President Masoud Pezeshkian handles day-to-day affairs, he is not considered to wield significant influence. In contrast, figures like Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was a key nuclear negotiator, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, National Security Chief Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, and IRGC Chief Ahmad Vahidi are all hardline veterans of the Iran-Iraq War who adhere to a radical Islamic ideology. Their hardline policies, including deploying militias from Iraq and Afghanistan to suppress dissent, are expected to make it even more challenging for the United States to resume peace talks.
