GSA Aims to Automate 1 Million Work Hours After 40% Workforce Reduction
GSA Targets Work Automation with AI After Workforce Cuts
The General Services Administration (GSA) plans to automate a significant portion of its internal work using artificial intelligence (AI), following a nearly 40% reduction in its total workforce under the Trump administration. GSA Deputy Administrator Michael Lynch announced the launch of a “million hours challenge” for its internal AI tool, USAi, to automate federal employees' and contractors' work. Lynch emphasized that this initiative aims to remove non-high-value-added time, allowing staff to focus on more critical opportunities within the agency rather than replacing personnel.
'EOA' Strategy and Potential for Broader Implementation
The GSA is currently nearing halfway to its one million work hours goal, starting this effort internally. Lynch noted that if successful, the project could expand beyond GSA. The agency is following an 'EOA' playbook, which stands for “eliminate, optimize, and automate.” Other agencies that experienced significant staffing cuts last year, such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the IRS, have also announced plans to rebuild capacity through AI.
