Sudan Civil War: A Deepening Humanitarian Crisis

The Sudan civil war has entered its third year, marked by a deepening humanitarian crisis that has displaced approximately 12 million people and claimed tens of thousands of lives. Since the power struggle between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on April 15, 2023, the country has been ravaged. Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), stated that famine still stalks parts of the country, and aid workers, trucks, and warehouses continue to come under attack, disrupting assistance. The ongoing conflict has effectively split the country between the two warring parties, raising fears of a formal partition.

International Involvement and Prospects for Peace

Nicholas Westcott, Professor of Practice in Diplomacy at SOAS, University of London, noted that after three years of war, neither side has achieved military superiority. He highlighted that international engagement has often tended to prop up one side or the other, rather than facilitating a reconciliation process. Countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia have supported the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been accused of backing the RSF. This external involvement complicates peace efforts, and the prospects for an imminent end to the conflict remain dim.

Pope Leo XIV Continues Historic Africa Tour

Pope Leo XIV has concluded his second and final day of a landmark visit to Algeria, celebrating mass at St. Augustine Basilica in Annaba. Following in the footsteps of his spiritual father, Saint Augustine, the Pontiff also visited the Little Sisters of the Poor shelter. The Pope is now preparing to depart for Cameroon, the second leg of his Africa tour. He is scheduled to make stops in Yaounde, the capital, Douala, the economic hub, and Bamenda, the capital of the northwest region. Christians in Cameroon are eagerly anticipating the Pope's visit, hoping his presence will ease socio-political tensions that have gripped the country for a decade and contribute to resolving its various crises.
