Bangladesh Implements Fuel Rationing Amidst 'US-Israel vs. Iran War' Fallout
Bangladesh Faces Fuel Crisis Following Outbreak of 'US-Israel vs. Iran War'
Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, was gripped by concerns of a fuel shortage on March 8, 2026, following news of the outbreak of the US-Israel vs. Iran War. This led to long queues of cars and motorcycles at petrol stations, with some drivers even waiting overnight. Mosharraf Hossain, a petrol station manager, stated that four days' worth of fuel inventory was depleted in a single day due to excessive demand. In response to this panic buying, the Bangladeshi government immediately implemented fuel rationing. Car drivers are limited to purchasing 10 liters per day, while motorcycle drivers are restricted to 2 liters. Driver Iftekhar Ahmed Nasim complained of significant inconvenience, stating that while the ration barely allows him to maintain his daily routine, he still has to wait at least 30 minutes to refuel.
Energy Minister Urges Calm, Denies Actual Shortage, Calls for Conservation
Bangladesh's Energy Minister, Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku, stated that there is currently no fuel shortage in the country and urged citizens to remain calm. He explained that refining facilities in oil-supplying nations are being bombed due to the war, and it is uncertain when this conflict will end. Minister Tuku advised the public to use their current fuel reserves prudently and economically, and requested them to refrain from unnecessary hoarding. This fuel rationing clearly demonstrates the impact of international instability on daily life in Bangladesh.
