US Destroys 16 Iranian Minelayers in Strait of Hormuz
US Military Destroys Iranian Vessels Following Trump's Warning
The United States recently announced it has destroyed 16 of Iran's mine-laying vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This operation took place shortly after President Donald Trump (who took office in January 2025) warned on March 10, 2026, that the U.S. would respond 'swiftly and violently' if Iran were to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime transit route in the Gulf region, through which more than 20% of the world's oil and gas shipments pass. Its narrowest point is approximately 30km wide, with Iran situated on one side and Oman on the other. Iran has previously threatened to close the strait, a move that, if realized, could halt global oil and gas trade and cause energy prices to skyrocket.
Iran's Military Buildup and International Response
Iran has invested heavily in submarines, anti-ship missiles, fast attack craft, and a large quantity of mines in recent years. Consequently, the United States is considering dispatching warships to the Strait of Hormuz to escort oil tankers. French President Emmanuel Macron also stated that European navies and other national navies could help protect international maritime transport once fighting subsides, though such intervention carries significant risks.
