Ticket Scalping Ring Using Macros Apprehended, Generated ₩7 Billion in Sales
Macro Abuse: Ticket Hoarding Scheme Uncovered
A ring that illegally secured and resold a large number of tickets for popular concerts and sports events has been apprehended by the police. They used an automated manipulation program, or 'macro,' which allowed them to select seats in advance and instantly complete payments the moment ticket sales opened. It was even revealed that they had developed their own mobile ID forgery system to bypass identity verification procedures. Kim Jeong-hyun, head of the Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit 2, stated that one individual secured up to 126 tickets for popular concerts, which are typically difficult for the general public to obtain. Their targets included concerts by famous artists like BTS J-Hope and popular sports events.
Organized Crime Generates ₩7 Billion in Profiteering
Over three years, this group generated immense profits by selling over ₩7 billion worth of scalped tickets. It was found that they resold tickets originally priced at approximately ₩200,000 for up to ₩5 million, achieving an exorbitant 25-fold profit. They recruited accomplices through SNS group chat rooms and purchased fan club accounts necessary for reservations, demonstrating a highly organized criminal operation. The police have currently arrested and referred three individuals, including the chief developer, to the prosecution, and are continuing their investigation to track down those who resold these tickets overseas. This case highlights the exploitation of online ticketing system loopholes, causing significant harm to innocent consumers, and the police plan to crack down severely on illegal ticket scalping.
