Philippine President Marcos Seeks UN Security Council Support and Pledges Fuel Supply Stabilization
Efforts to Join UN Security Council as Non-Permanent Member and Call for International Peace
Ferdinand Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines, addressed a special general assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, emphasizing the Philippines' potential role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and appealing for support. President Marcos stated that the Philippines is 'ready to quiet the voices of division, provide a balanced voice, and always be a voice for principled peace.' The Philippines is competing with Kyrgyzstan for an Asia-Pacific non-permanent seat in an election on June 3, 2026, having campaigned since 2013. The President expressed high expectations, buoyed by strong expressions of support.
President Marcos also urged de-escalation of tensions and cessation of hostilities in conflict zones worldwide, including the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Sahel, Yemen, and Myanmar. He emphasized that residents in these regions 'live in fear and despair, and this tragedy must stop,' asserting that the free and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid is not subject to negotiation. He further highlighted the importance of addressing climate change, referring to it as 'the greatest existential test of all civilizations.'
Strengthening Economic and Defense Cooperation, Stabilizing Domestic Fuel Supply
During his working visit to New York, President Marcos held business meetings with American companies. Notably, one U.S. medical glove manufacturer pledged to invest at least $200 million in the Philippines, creating 2,000 jobs. He also met with U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Aldridge Colby, to discuss ways to accelerate the defense partnership between the Philippines and the United States.
In a press conference, President Marcos assured that the Philippines' fuel supply is sufficient despite rising global oil prices, with additional supplies underway. He added that he would request the National Assembly to expedite legislation granting him emergency powers to reduce fuel taxes. Furthermore, the Philippine government has initiated efforts to repatriate overseas Filipino workers in Middle East conflict zones. It has confirmed that former Congressman Zaldy Co is in Portugal and is working with local authorities to facilitate his return.
