Dan Gertler-Linked Firm to Pay $30 Million in Congo Corruption Settlement
Settlement in DRC Mining Corruption Probe
The former holding company of Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler is slated to pay $30 million to settle a Dutch corruption investigation concerning mining deals in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The company, Fleurette, registered in the Netherlands, served as the holding company for both the Dan Gertler group and commodities giant Glencore. Dutch authorities have been investigating since 2018 whether Fleurette paid bribes to secure copper and cobalt mining rights in the DRC at below-market prices.
Former President's Advisor Implicated
During the investigation, it was suggested that tens of millions of US dollars may have been paid to an advisor of former DRC President Joseph Kabila. Former President Kabila ruled the DRC from 2001 to 2019 and is known to be a close associate of Dan Gertler. This settlement is seen as drawing a line under long-standing corruption allegations between the parties.
