Gabon Officially Requests New IMF Agreement to Seek Fiscal Stability
New Agreement Requested from IMF
The Central African nation of Gabon has officially requested a new support agreement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This request comes just days after an IMF delegation visited Gabon, indicating Libreville's proactive efforts to stabilize its finances. An earlier agreement, signed in 2021, was suspended due to implementation issues, and discussions to resume it last year also ended after Gabon sought a new approach. However, negotiations have been ongoing since January of this year.
Reform Demands and Challenges
The IMF is urging the Gabonese government to continue broad reforms, including public finance management, governance, and improving the business environment. It particularly emphasizes the commitment to combating corruption. As an OPEC member, Gabon's finances could be stabilized with IMF support, but concerns have been raised regarding a lack of debt transparency and the government's resolve to push through reforms. Discussions between the IMF and Gabon are currently ongoing.
