USFK Transport Aircraft Movements Spotted, Suggesting Middle East Destination

Recent observations show US military transport aircraft actively moving at Osan Air Base. Yesterday (the 9th), a large C-17 transport aircraft was on standby, and the day before yesterday (the 8th), an extra-large C-5 transport aircraft was spotted at the same location. On the 6th, even more transport aircraft were at the base, and the following day, the 7th, five C-17 flights were confirmed to have departed, moving to various locations worldwide. Notably, on the 2nd, the flight path of a C-5 transport aircraft heading from Osan to the Indian Ocean was detected, indicating that US military transport aircraft have been busily moving in and out of USFK bases, including Camp Humphreys, over the past week.

Possible Relocation of Some Patriot Missiles to Middle East and Their Impact

Amidst these transport aircraft movements, the possibility of some USFK air defense assets being relocated to the Middle East has been raised. The relocation of assets for facility defense within US military bases does not require an agreement from the South Korean military. Concerns are also emerging that if the Middle East situation prolongs, operating personnel could be rotationally deployed, similar to the previous Iran crisis. While this raises worries about affecting peninsular defense missions, it is expected that some launchers and interceptor missiles from among the eight USFK Patriot batteries, as well as reserve batteries, would be prioritized for relocation. Ham Hyeong-pil, Head of the Security Strategy Research Center at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, analyzed, "It is highly probable that launchers and guided missiles kept as reserves have been transferred (to the Middle East), and if the transfer occurs within the range of three batteries, there will be virtually no actual impact (on our security)."
