India Pushes for Women's Quota in 2029 General Election; Considers Streamlined Process

Women's Quota Targeted for 2029 Implementation

The Indian central government is actively considering applying a 33% reservation of seats for women in general elections and state assembly elections starting from the 2029 general election. The government aims to expedite the implementation of the women's quota, as stipulated in the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, and is open to introducing related legislation during the current parliamentary session.

Streamlining Procedures and Seeking Opposition Consensus

Government officials are concerned that the implementation of the existing bill could be delayed by complex constitutional procedures such as the census and delimitation of constituencies. According to Akhilesh Sharma, Political Editor, the census is not expected to be completed until March 2027, with the subsequent formation and work of the delimitation commission anticipated to take an additional two to three years. This raises concerns that the women's quota may not be implementable by 2029. In response, the government is considering bypassing these procedures and implementing the women's quota early through a constitutional amendment. Officials have stated they are working to reach a consensus with the opposition parties.
