Five Iranian Women's Football Players Granted Asylum in Australia
Five Iranian Women's Football Players to Remain in Australia
The Australian government has granted asylum to five Iranian women's football players. Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke signed the relevant documents early Tuesday morning, approving their applications. The players had caused concern for their well-being upon returning home after remaining silent during the national anthem at the AFC Women's Asian Cup. The Australian government stated that it carried out a 'delicate operation' to allow the players to safely express their desire for asylum.
Team's Departure and Future Prospects
The five players granted asylum are Fatemeh Pasandideh, Zahra Ghanbari, Zahra Sarbali, Atefeh Ramazanzadeh, and Mona Hamoudi. The remaining players, excluding these five, departed Gold Coast on Tuesday afternoon under police escort. At the time, dozens of protesters blocked the bus, shouting 'Save our girls.' The Australian government stated that the door remains open for other Iranian team members who wish to seek asylum. However, there is also analysis suggesting that players might hesitate to seek asylum due to potential pressure their families could face if they do not return home.
