Ukraine Dispatches 'Drone Team' to Defend U.S. Base in Jordan
Ukraine Supports Defense of U.S. Military Base in Jordan
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine has dispatched interceptor drones and a team of drone experts to protect a U.S. military base stationed in Jordan, following a request from the U.S. government. In an interview with The New York Times, President Zelenskyy stated that Washington made the request last Thursday, and Kyiv responded promptly by sending the team the very next day. He added, “We reacted immediately. Of course, we said we would send our specialists.”
Background: Escalating Iran-Related Conflicts in the Middle East
This request comes amid escalating Iran-related conflicts in the Middle East. The United States and Gulf nations are intercepting hundreds of missiles and thousands of drones launched by Iran in retaliation for a U.S.-Israeli attack that led to the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian drones have targeted the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, and an attack on Kuwait’s tactical operations center resulted in the deaths of six U.S. military personnel. Particularly noteworthy is the cost disparity between relatively inexpensive Shahed drones and expensive air defense systems like Patriot missiles. A single Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor missile costs up to $3.8 million, whereas one Shahed drone costs approximately $20,000 to $50,000.
