Bengaluru Faces Commercial LPG Cylinder Shortage Crisis

Bengaluru, India is experiencing a deepening shortage of commercial LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders, pushing the local hotel and restaurant industry into a severe crisis. This has put many hotels at risk of closure, and significant impacts on the livelihoods of those in the related industries are anticipated. One hotel owner stated, “I was shocked to receive notification from distributors that LPG supply had been suspended.” He pointed out that while the government promised a sufficient 60-day supply, the reality is different.

Sudden Supply Halt and Call for Government Intervention

The owner of Nisarga Hotel reported that distributors stopped refilling commercial LPG cylinders last Saturday, citing factory issues and a policy prioritizing domestic supply. He explained that his current cylinders might last for only one to two days, but the sudden halt in supply left no time to secure alternative fuels. Induction stoves, firewood, or charcoal, typically used for residential purposes, are inefficient for large-scale commercial kitchens and require significant time and cost for conversion. He suspects that distributors are hoarding cylinders to sell them later at higher prices for profit.

Approximately 40,000 hotels in Bengaluru rely on LPG, leading to warnings that widespread closures are inevitable if this issue is not resolved. The hotel owner expressed concern that while guests are not yet aware of the situation, they will soon begin to feel uneasy. He has contacted ruling and opposition party Members of Parliament in Karnataka, who have promised to raise the issue in parliament and discuss it with relevant officials. He urged the government to intervene promptly to ensure a stable supply of LPG.
