US B-52 Bombers Arrive in UK Amid Rising Middle East Tensions Over Iran
US Military Buildup in UK and Deepening Iran Conflict
US military power is being augmented in the United Kingdom, escalating Middle East tensions. While Sir Keir Starmer initially refused the use of UK military bases for an attack on Iran, the situation has now changed. Three Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bombers have landed at RAF Fairford Air Base in Gloucestershire, each loaded with approximately 32,000 kilograms of weaponry. This deployment is part of a broader increase in US military aircraft heading to the Middle East region, with several transport planes already having transited through the base.
Legal Issues of an Iran War and Putin's Strategic Gains
Security and defense analyst Professor Michael Clarke highlighted the complex legal issues surrounding an attack on Iran under international law. He explained that an initial attack on Iran might be illegal, but responding after Iran attacks an ally could be legitimate. Professor Clarke emphasized that while the British government's support with fighter jets to defend the airspace of allies such as Qatar, Jordan, and the UAE is justifiable, direct involvement of British aircraft in bombing targets inside Iran is a different matter. He analyzed that Russian President Vladimir Putin desires a prolonged war to gain a favorable position in his relationship with former US President Donald Trump and to leave Europe to shoulder the burden of the Ukraine war alone.
Russia-Iran Military Cooperation and Ukraine's Concerns
Iran's supply of drones and components to Russia has reversed, with Russia now providing technology to Iran. Russia is mass-producing Shahed 136 drones (Russian designation Geran-2) at Alabuga in Tatarstan, and these drones have improved performance. Ukrainian President Zelensky criticized a double standard, noting that Gulf allies launched 500 Patriot missiles in just one week, while Ukraine has received fewer over the past four years. This highlights concerns about the indirect impact of Russia-Iran military cooperation on the Ukraine war and the imbalance of Western support.
