The US and Israel's war with Iran has entered its sixth day, generating significant ripple effects beyond the Middle East to Europe and Ukraine. Middle East Front Expands, International Reaction

The US and Israel's war with Iran has escalated into its sixth day, intensifying tensions across the Middle East. Azerbaijan claims that two drones launched from Iran entered its territory, while Iran continues its drone attacks against Israel and Gulf states (where US assets are located). Six people were injured in Abu Dhabi by intercepted drone debris.

Israel is continuing its attacks on Iran and Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah objectives supported by Iran. A particularly tension-escalating incident was the sinking of an Iranian warship by a US submarine in international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka, resulting in at least 87 sailors killed. Iran condemned this as an 'act of cruelty.' DW Middle East analyst Shani Rozanes assessed that the current situation represents rapid escalation, making it difficult for either side to find an easy exit through agreement.

Impact on Europe and Ukraine

The repercussions of the Middle East conflict are extending to Europe and Ukraine. European Union (EU) countries, including the UK, France, Spain, Greece, and Italy, are deploying naval assets such as helicopters, drones, warships, and aircraft carriers to defend Cyprus. The US has approved France's use of its Middle East bases. Recently, a drone attack occurred at a British RAF base in Cyprus, launched from Beirut, Lebanon, and is suspected to be the work of Hezbollah.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he is receiving requests for help with defense against Iranian Shahed drones, adding that Ukraine can share its expertise in countering Iranian drones. DW correspondent Nick Connolly pointed out that Iranian Shahed drones are very inexpensive, placing a significant cost burden on expensive Western air defense systems and risking inventory depletion. He added that Gulf states are expected to fund Ukraine through the purchase of US weapons.

Energy and Diplomatic Ramifications

Russia is benefiting from rising oil prices, which positively impacts its funding for the war in Ukraine. Marianne Riederbold (Defense Expert, University of Oslo) analyzed that the Iran war is diverting US attention from Ukraine, increasing Europe's security burden. There is growing sentiment within the European Union (EU) that Russia's war funding must be pressured by reducing Russian energy purchases and thoroughly implementing sanctions.

DW Middle East analyst Shani Rozanes stated that Iran's denial of the Azerbaijan attack appears to be an attempt to maintain good relations with Azerbaijan. Expert Riederbold added that European travelers are expressing concerns, and there is also worry about an increased risk of terrorism. Europe recognizes the primary threat from Russia and emphasizes the need to pursue a unified defense policy and seek diplomatic solutions.
